The history of Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University of Bandung cannot be separated from the history of IAIN (State Institute for Islamic Studies) SGD Bandung. Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University of Bandung was formally established based on the Decree of the President of Republic of Indonesia Number 57/ 2005. Meanwhile, IAIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung was established on April 18th 1968/ 10 Muharram 1388 Hijriyah based on the Ministry of Religious Affairs (MORA) Regulation Number 56/1968.

IAIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung existed as a result of the demand of Muslims prominent figures in West Java. The process began in 1967 when a number of respected figures, like Ulama and Muslim intellectuals such as K.H.A. Muiz, K.H.R. Sudja’i, and Arthata along with the consent of the Governor of West Java, took the initiative to form the Preparation Committee for IAIN. This committee was approved by the MORA Regulation Number 128/1967.

Furthermore, under the MORA Regulation Number 56/1968, at the time of the establishment, IAIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung had only four faculties: (1) The Faculty of Islamic Laws; (2) The Faculty of Islamic Education; (3) The Faculty of Theology in Bandung, and (4) The Faculty of Islamic Education in Garut. The Faculties were located at Jalan Lengkong Kecil Number 5 Bandung.
In 1973, IAIN moved to Jalan Tangkuban Perahu Number 14 Bandung. Since 1974, IAIN has been located on Jalan Cipadung 105 Bandung. Due to changes on the district division in 1970, The Faculty of Islamic Education in Bogor and The Faculty of Islamic Laws in Sukabumi which were initially branches of the IAIN Syarif Hidayatullah Jakarta, were integrated into IAIN Bandung. The same was true for the Faculty of Islamic Education in Cirebon which became a branch of the IAIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung on March 5th 1976.

Until 2009, UIN Bandung which has seven faculties of Undergraduate Studies and one faculty of Postgraduate Studies has been led by seven rectors: Prof. K.H. Anwar Musaddad (1968-1972), Letkol H. Abjan Soelaeman (1972-1973), Drs. H. Solahuddin Sanusi (1973-1977), Drs. H. Djauharuddin AR (1977-1986), Prof. DR. H. Rachmat Djatnika (1986-1995), Prof. Dr. H. Endang Soetari Ad., M.Si. (1995-2003), and Prof. Dr. H. Nanat Fatah Natsir, MS. (2003-2011).
In 2005, based on The Decree of the President of Republic of Indonesia Number 57/ 2005, 10 October 2005/ 6 Ramadhan 1426 H, the status of IAIN Bandung was changed into UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. Then, in 2006, based on the rule of Religion Minister of the Republic of Indonesia Number 6/2006 on organization and Work Management, two additional faculties were established: Faculty of Science and Technology and Faculty of Psychology.

Goals
The goals of Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University of Bandung are:

1. a. To prepare students who possess the characteristic of akhlak al-karimah, spiritual wisdom, knowledgeable, and professional.
2. b. To develop research into the development, the process and product of science and technology on Islamic values and social responsibility.
3. c. To spread Islamic sciences and other Islamic based-sciences to strive to the social welfare and enrich national culture.


Vision
The vision of Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University of Bandung is to make an excellent and competitive university in integrating and developing Islamic studies with the contemporary sciences based on the paradigm: revelations guide science.



Mission
The mission of Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University of Bandung is to prepare the Ulul Albab generation that has the capability of:
1. Combining and practicing zikr and fikr in their entire life,
2. Possessing spiritual, emotional, and intelligent quotient,
3. Finding, developing, and applying science, technology, social, culture, and art.

Meaning of Symbol

1. Guided by the Vision, Mission, and Goals SGD UIN Jakarta as the implementation of QS Ali Imran: 190-191 is a Ulul Albab which has a characteristic balance between remembrance and thought;
2. Gold Color pentagonal star is the main pivot point symbolizes God Almighty as the source of all sources of all human life, including science as reflected in Qur'aniyah verses, and at the same time symbolizes the "Pillars of Islam" and "Pancasila" as the Constitution of the Republic Indonesia;
3. White hexagonal star symbolizes "Kauniyah Verses" to be dug up, managed, and developed by man, and guided by revelation to realize the human as caliph on earth who served for natural prosperity, and also symbolizes "Pillars of Faith";
4. Open Books Young Green Color symbolizes the circular dynamics of development of a diverse family of scholarly, broad, and deep based on the paradigm of Revelation Guiding Science, is the determination of the entire academic society UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung as an icon of civilization to be ready to reconnect the golden age of Islamic civilization century 9-13 AD;
5. Twelve diamonds totaling Blue symbolizes the fusion framing Faith, Science, and Amal, and describes the number of letters "La ilaha illallah" as a symbol of "Science Tauhidullah".

Program Development

Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University of Bandung has a development direction through several stages. Year 2004 to 2007 UIN directed into college and competitive excellence. From 2008 to 2011 to continue the development of higher education and competitive excellence. Year 2012 until 2016 Research University to the development and subsequent years until 2017 UIN SGD Bandung in 2020 is expected to have been able to become International University

The first stage of Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University of Bandung directed to universities and competitive excellence. It is seen from some of the main indicators:

1. The ratio of each applicant must register the program of study and tamping force reached at least 3:1;
2. Graduates have a clear competence in accordance with the program of study;
3. Graduates of each course has the current capacity and one or two foreign languages (Arabic/English);
4. Lecturer appropriate skills courses;
5. 30% lecturers educated doctor;
6. UIN lecturers 10% have academic positions as professor;
7. 30% of foreign lecturers speaking (Arabic / English);
8. 10% of employees are able to use one foreign language (Arabic / English);
9. Laboratories and libraries are adequate in accordance with the requirements of study program development;
10. Administration established computerized and online;
11. Each faculty has foreign students;
12. Opening of an international-class program;
13. 40% academic community has been using the Internet in order to build an academic culture;
14. The smaller ratio of the number of lecturers and students with a 1:20 ratio;
15. 80% journal of Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University of Bandung has been accredited;
16. And courses accredited institution with a minimum value of B.

A. Institutional
The institutional development is focused on the transformative orientation of UIN especially on supra-structure and infra-structure aspects. Superstructure consists of main duty, function, and the role of administration in UIN should be organized effectively and efficiently. The organization of superstructure is also due to manage new faculties such as The Faculty of Psychology, The Faculty of Science and Technology, and The Faculty of Social Science, Politics, and Economy.
To set up infra-structure which consists of human resource development, the arrangement of academic concepts which is related to the epistemology of UIN, master plan, the transformation of IAIN to UIN, Research University, guideline academic administration, guideline of administration, and guideline of other institutional.

B. Personnel
UIN SGD Bandung develops the competency of lecturers and personals by improving their duties function, and role on education. The improvement of lectures’ function and role educational staff are intended to fulfill their duties as the doer of the Tri Darma Perguruan Tinggi:
The Number of personals is 420 Permanent Lecturers, 6 Librarian, and 211 administrators, 123 Private University-Stationed Lecture. Moreover, UIN also have 302 Non-Permanent Lecturers and 55 Administrators. The composition of Permanent Lecturers based on their academic rank is 19 Professors, 319 Lectors, and 44 Assistants. The composition of Permanent Lecturers based on their Educational background, is 66 Doctoral Degree, 239 Master’s Degrees, and 134 Bachelor Degree.

C. Curriculum
There are two curriculums used in State Islam University Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung. Curriculum for religious or Islamic program refers to Department of Religious Curriculum 1997 while non-religious or Islamic program refers to Department of National Education curriculum. Later, Ministry of National Education released Ministry’s decree number 232/U/2000 (The guideline of Tertiary Education Curriculum Arrangement and Assessment) and number 045/U/2002 (Tertiary Education Core Curriculum) which changed the previous curriculum to competency-based curriculum.
Curriculum materials consist of: Religious, Nationality, Language, and Vocational while the material of competency-based curriculum consists of Prominent - Competency Subject (MKKU), Proponent-Competency Subject (MKKP), and Basic – Competency Subject (MKKD) and some other competencies and the other competencies (MKKL).

D. Teaching-Learning Process
Learning Development Program is placed to provide the intensification of learning, learning model, and evaluation system of learning result. Learning model uses semester credit system. Related to this, Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University of Bandung has already made Guidance Book for Academic Activity, Guidance Book for Writing Paper, Thesis, Dissertation, Guidance Book for Practice, Guidance Book for Job Training, and other guidance books. An intensive learning process is conducted by lecturing, improvement of the assistant academic quality and their presence. Academic assessment is administered by conducting final and middle test semester, writing paper, writing book report, comprehensive test, writing thesis and the munaqashah, final exam.
Related to the learning system support, Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University of Bandung applies a Ma’had Aly Program as an alternative model. This education program with the combination between Islamic Boarding School Model (ma`had) and University. Ma’had Aly is called as High Pesantren that has some elements: (1) Kyai as Guardian of Pesantren; (2) University Student or Santri University; (3) Organizer; (4) Mosque; (5) Student Base or Asrama; (6) Norma: the Aim of Curriculum, the Sources of Learning (Kitab), and learning methods (Sorogan, Halaqah, and Memorizing).
The aim of Ma’had Aly is to create students who have abilities: (1) Powerful in Aqidah Islamiyah; (2) Qualified in al-Akhlaq al-Karimah; (3) High Level in Intellectuality; (4) Professional.
Learning materials studied in Ma`had Aly are:

1. Aqidah Islamiyah (Way of Muslim Life’s)
2. Al-Akhlaq al-Karimah
3. Al-Qur’an (Reading, Writing, Quranic Science, Quranic Studies, and Memorizing the Quran)
4. Al-Hadis (Hadith, Musthalah al-Hadith, Memorizing Hadith)
5. Arabic Language (Nahwu, Sharf, Balaghah, Insya’, Imla’, Muhadatsah)
6. English Language (Listening, Speaking Reading, and Writing)
7. Life Performance, Entrepreneurship and Leadership (the Combination between ESQ and MHMMD Method)
8. Natural Sciences: Mathematic
9. Improve in Technology: Computer and Information Technology.

E. Library
Library Development Program is directed toward setting up library system, library management, increasing book numbers, improving quality service, making catalogue system with cyber and digital library connections system. It is also important to provide more copies of printed matters by purchasing or copying books and other printed matters needed.
Today, UIN library has 113.423 titles of literatures. About 24.596 titles out of the number have already been maintained. These titles constitute 93.164 copies while some 26.936 copies are still in the process of arrangement. Library activity is placed in 3rd Floor of 2.100 M2 furnished by related facilities. To give a good service, the maintenance of UIN Library is done by computerization program using SPISIS Program in cooperation with Institute of Agriculture Bogor or IPB and OPAC (Online Public Access Catalog). These are completed with automatization, both are software, brain ware, and hardware. To provide human resource development at library of UIN SGD Bandung, some librarians and staffs are involved in librarian training.

F. Research
Research is an element of Public service the Tri Darma Perguruan Tinggi. It is an instrument of academic development and religious science, social, culture, science and technology. Research skill is developed by workshop, training, and aid. There are 149 research titles in Research Center Office. Research development is focused on increasing research quantity and quality, spreading research information, and using research for multi-purposes.
In making or deciding policy, program, method, and approach of problems should be based on research. It is expected to gain the target of research university paradigm. Research products are published in the form of books and journals. Approximately 700 scientific research books have been published by local or national publisher. The catalog and description of them are published under the title of the Profile Buku Karya Tulis Ilmiah Dosen UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung.

G. Public Services
Public service is one of the main duties of the Tridarma Perguruan Tinggi (higher education services). In relation to this, the duty is realized by doing KKN (Student Public Service Program), Program Desa Binaan (Rural Development Program), Masjid Binaan (Mosque Development Service), Madrasah Binaan (Islamic School Development Service), and Bina Kampus Lingkungan (Campus Environment Development). The application of the KKN for the students of undergraduate program is applied once a year. They are disseminated in countryside, sub districts, within the regencies of West Java province.
The Desa Binaan Program is implemented in the form of spiritual and mental development, socio-economic development, empowerment the role of the students/alumni in their hometowns. The Desa Binaan consists of several country sides, namely: Cipadung, Cisaranten Wetan (Bandung City), Giri Mekar, Cibiru Hilir (Bandung Regency), Kutamandiri (Sumedang Regency). Additionally, the program called Program Binaan is a specific model in managing the Mosque of At-Ta`awun (Puncak Cianjur-Bogor) and the Agung Mosque Ciromed, in cooperation with the provincial government of West Java.

H. Students and Alumni
Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University of Bandung has 13.567 students of Undergraduate Program, 406 students of Master’s Program, 7.626 Students of Diploma-2 Program, 1250 Students of Diploma-3 Program, and 50 students of Akta-IV Program. UIN improves student’s intelligence, al-akhlaq al-karimah, interest and talent as well as students’ welfare.
To develop the interest and talent of the students, Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University of Bandung provides student institutions as a unit of the KBM. In university level, student organizations consist of Student Consultative Council (the MPM), Student Representative Council (the DPM), and Student Executive Board (the BEM). Beside that, UIN Sunan Gunung Djati Bandung has some student activity units ,such as Student Regimen (the MENWA), Scout ( the PRAMUKA), Institute for Islamic Studies (the LPIK), Institute for Language Development (the LPB), Woman Studies Centre (the WSC), Student Publisher (the SUAKA ), Tilawatil Qur’an Development (UPTQ), Teater Awal, Student Chorus (the PSM), Institute for Painting and Calligraphy (LSLK), Tae Kwon Do, the Perguruan Silat Tenaga Dasar (PSTD),
The Perguruan Silat Krachtology Matahari (PSKM), the Pusaka Saputra Paku Banten (PSPB), Soccer , Ping Pong (PTM), the Bandung Karate Club (BKC), Basket Ball (the FABBIS), Student Volley Ball (the PVBM), Badminton (the PERBAMA), the Mahasiswa Pecinta Kelestarian Alam (MAHAPEKA), the Koperasi Mahasiswa (KOPMA), the Lembaga Inkubasi Mahasiswa (LIKM), Student Islamic Propagation Board (LDM), and the Tajimalela.

I. Partnership
Partnership program is due to support the improvement of academic quality, research, public service, as well as to develop campus facilities of Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University of Bandung. This program is conducted on profit orientation.
It is also conducted in cooperation with governmental institution, private institution, mass media, publishers, research institution, social institute, and other institutions which support the development of UIN in the future. In 2004-2005 UIN collaborated with Provincial Government of West Java, the KNPI, the LPEM Jabar, Iran Embassy, the US Embassy the UIN Sari Hidayatullah Jakarta, the STT Telkom, the RELO, Australian Partnership Scholarship (APS), the BNI, the BRI, the BHS, the Bank Jabar, the BMI, the HU Piker Racist, the PT TELKOM and the HU Republika.
Outside government: a. University namely the University of al-Azhar; LSM namely CECID; c. Council (US embassy, Saudi Arabia embassy, Iran embassy, Relo and FWUI); d. Cooperation with donor institutions (Fulbright, Aminef, Asia Foundation, ADS, APS and INIS).

J. Facilities
The campus of Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University of Bandung is located at Cipadung on 105 Jalan A.H. Nasution, Bandung, in the area of 70.250 M2. The Location of buildings is 35.750 M2. Buildings were built in the area of 35.715 M2. It consists of Rector and Vice Rectors Offices, Administration Office, Library, Faculties, Classrooms, Laboratories, Student Organization Offices, Auditorium, Mosque, Building and Basket Court, Soccer Field, Stadium, Student Center, the Koperasi Mahasiswa, the Takhasus (Ma’had Aly), the WARTEL, Post Office, the WARNET, Hospital, Bank, the Koperasi Dosen dan Karyawan, Cafeteria, Officials’ house, Garages, and so forth. Land and blueprint for buildings of new three building that consist of offices and classrooms are available. In addition, the area of 2000 M2 located in Cileunyi is available for Ma’had ‘Aly Campus.

K. Finance
Finance development program is directed to how to enhance the ability of Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University of Bandung to guarantee sufficient finance in conducting Tri Darma Perguruan Tinggi UIN SGD Bandung continuously. The efforts of funding are done referring to vision, mission and goals of Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University of Bandung, and not contradictive with the progressing Acts. Accountability and transparence are endeavored to glorify the funding system without forsaking correct accountancy norms, developing of Internal Audit System (IAS) that can shows system of good, transparent, and accountable finance. Responsible and transparent-periodic report guarantees the conduct of academic program which is qualified and continuous.
Program development covers:

1. Having a report of financial audit containing reliance of financial resource and its utility;
2. Having data on fund proportion allocated for developing of academic program compared with developing of investment on physic aspects or facilities;
3. Having a monitoring system and an internally funding evaluation to all work-unit approved by authoritative leaders;
4. Having mechanism on tuition evaluation imposed on students and a report of decision-making;
5. Being capable of recruiting fund for the academic programs through a work treaty, partnership, research results, academic works and empowerment of existing resource.


L. Management
The institutional management of Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University of Bandung needs the system of cultivation from the top to the bottom: from the university leader level to the study programs covering division of function and clear and systematic authority, Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and responsibility of each organizational management unit. System of Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University of Bandung management refers to the president rule no. 57 in 2005 on conversion of IAIN to be UIN, and PMA no. 6 in 2006 on Organization and Management. Organization structures and the other units of Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University of Bandung, through this PMA no. 6 in 2006, are regulated and major duty, function, and authority reflecting distribution of duty and authority (job description) of each unit too. This PMA is also used for managing and monitoring work of each unit of Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University of Bandung.
The management program development consists of:

1. Socializing rules, norms, and guide books correlated with the institution conduct;
2. Making design and position analysis, job description, work procedure, improvement program on managerial competence;
3. Maximizing management process enabling the work units to execute overall management function;
4. Establishing criteria and assessment as to measure work of each unit;
5. Implementing guidebook on accountability of government work and report of government work.


M. Information System
The information system of Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University of Bandung is developed through instrument on basic mastery of integrated information system. The integrated information system is intended to support the management and improvement of academic program quality, administration, infrastructure, networks, management, and finance. The information system developed through the approach of informatics technology development is expected to be able to form integrated information system of the database, analysis, storing, restoring data. The developed information and data cover: (1) information system on academic, (2) about students, (3) human resource, (4) facilities, (5) administration, finance, and software to support academic and non-academic affairs.
The development of the information system is also utilized to preserve internal communication and coordination, and collaboration with another institution, government, alumni, industry, or the public.
The program of the information system consists of (a) arranging blueprint developing of UIN's information system, management including system of data distribution, authority of data access, and disaster recovery system; (b) developing of the integrated information system covering academic information system, human resource, administration, funding, cooperation, and the like; (c) Supporting software, decision support system helping academic and non-academic leaders; (d) local area network constructing internal and external communication at campus; (e) developing of website capacity with bandwidth ratio for overall academic affairs.

N. Quality Assurance System
The quality assurance system of Sunan Gunung Djati State Islamic University of Bandung is developed as to preserve and increase quality education in continuous ways. It also functions as a part of management system and process of academic and non-academic program conduct. It is formed at the level of university and the whole units and arranged through organizing quality manuals containing quality statement as an institution commitment, policy, procedure, instruction and quality works. In implementation of the quality assurance, quality targets of each work unit should be done, as suitable for work capacity of each component. This program is intended to develop mechanism on continuing quality improvement to adapt with development on national and international scale.
Monitoring and evaluation on the process of continuing quality improvement are conducted through coordinating with internal audit implementer. In addition, data recording system and good information on process and results of implementation on the quality assurance system are so significant. The results of the quality assurance as a whole is used as a part of external quality assurance program in the shape of institution and study program accreditation.
Program of developing of the quality assurance system covers: (1) arranging quality manual data, (2) organizing quality manual data, (3) implementing quality assurance, (4) establishing quality targets and monitoring and evaluating quality achievement in education, research, civil service, human resource, works, administration, funding, infrastructure, and many other supporting elements, (5) arranging data recording on information, registration of quality system certification: ISO 9001-2000 by institution of international certification, (6) providing fund that guarantees improvement of internal and external quality periodically and continuously.
